The distance an AR 15 can shoot accurately greatly depends on the rifle makeup, ammunition, and shooter. It is known as the effective range of the rifle. But generally speaking the effective range of an AR 15 with standard Mil-spec build chambered in .223 is 400-600 yards. The range can vary depending on climate conditions, temperature, altitude, and wind as well as barrels length, and caliber of round. Of course, there are many other factors, but suffice to say a good rule of thumb is if you are steady handed with a decent rifle use 500 yards as a rule.
How Accurate is an AR 15?
The accuracy of an AR 15 rifle depends on my factors. Including those mentioned above. But here is a list of effective ranges assuming everything else is equal.
.223 (5.56 NATO): 400-600 METERS
.308 800 METERS
.338 Laputa 1500 METERS
.50 BMG (1 MILE) 1600 METERS
9mm 100 METERS
.450 Bushmaster 250 METERS
Keep in mind the range does not refer or indicate the power of the bullet at that range. There is a trade off of range to power with the only possible exception being the 50 CAL.
But, for the most part, the AR 15 is a very accurate rifle when used properly and within it’s effective range.
Who Makes the Most Accurate AR 15?
Considering all the different factors that contribute to the accuracy of an AR 15, each rifle is unique. The best and most accurate AR 15 is built by a custom Armorer. The reason is they do not use mil-spec parts, they make custom parts with the tightest of tolerances. Every part is specially designed and machined to fit together without any slop or play. There is no generic, or off the shelf AR 15 that even comes close to the same accuracy of a master armorer one-off build.
But the truth is, unless you are a sharpshooter for your profession, there is no reason for you to have a $20-40K rifle custom built. Buy high quality parts and have them assembled according to mil-spec and you will have a fairly accurate reliable weapon for any weekending you have in mind.
How to Shoot an AR 15 Properly?
If you are asking yourself this question, let me start by saying there is nothing you can read that will teach you to shoot an AR 15 properly. You need to take a class or course to learn proper safety and procedures for cleaning, shooting, and maintain the weapon with safety in mind.
After that the secret is practice. You will get to know your rifle after you have used your AR 15 for enough hours. I have always believed that after 10K hours you can be highly proficient if not professional at anything you want.
Chances are that you are not going to spend anywhere near 10K hours shooting your AR 15, so the best way to learn to shoot your AR 15 is to get hands on training from someone who can shorten your learning curve.
